Summertime Activities for Seniors and Families

Summer is a great time of year to venture outdoors, with the warmer weather providing our residents with the opportunity to engage in a range of activities. Spending time outdoors is beneficial for people of all ages, but especially as we age. Studies have shown that spending time outside has a myriad of health and social benefits. Not only does it feel good to soak up the vitamin D and fresh air, but spending time outdoors has also been shown to improve mental and physical well-being. Here’s some of our suggestions on how you or your loved-one can take advantage of the sunny season.

Enjoy Outdoor Picnics and Walks
Take advantage of the sunny weather by organising a picnic at nearby parks like Penshurst Park or Oatley Park. Pack a light, nutritious lunch, bring along some comfy chairs, and enjoy quality time surrounded by nature. A gentle stroll along the park’s walking trails can be both refreshing and beneficial for physical and mental well-being.

Visit Local Cafés
Summer is the perfect time to explore local cafés like Short Black Espresso Bar or Ki Allo Cafe. Enjoy a relaxed brunch with family or friends while soaking up the vibrant community atmosphere.

Family BBQs
Nothing says summer like a classic Aussie barbecue! This classic summer activity is a great way to spend a balmy afternoon. We encourage residents to invite their friends and family, take a stroll through our grounds and enjoy quality time together.

Take Scenic Drives or Day Trips
Plan a scenic drive to nearby attractions such as the Royal National Park or Botany Bay. These destinations offer beautiful views, picnic spots, and gentle walking paths that are accessible and relaxing.

Whatever activities you choose to do during Summer, it’s important to remember some basic rules to beat the heat:

  • Avoid being outdoors in the hottest part of the day;
  • Apply a Broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30+ or above;
  • Wear clothes made from breathable fabrics, plus sunglasses and a hat;
  • Stay in the shade where possible;
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you don’t get dehydrated.
