What to consider when selecting an aged care home

The move into residential aged care is often a period of great change, and here at Georges Estate we are committed to making the transition as easy as possible. It is our mission to provide care that enables people to live their life the way they choose, focusing on a whole-of-person care program, as well as attending to a person’s physical, emotional, social, cultural, spiritual, financial and environmental wellbeing.

When it comes time to select an aged care home, for yourself or a loved one, there are many factors to consider. Continue reading for our guide on what to keep in mind when commencing your research.

Core values and culture of care
The core values and mission of an aged care home will underpin their culture of care and service to their residents and is a very important element when considering your options. We believe in creating a home with the highest standards of care and offering a place of health and healing in a luxuriously appointed setting and ensure this is adopted in our care practices.

It is our mission to embrace what makes every person unique – from likes and habits and culture and hobbies. We welcome people from all walks of life and ensure that every individual in our care feels safe and secure. These beliefs are embodied by all within the Georges Estate community and is just one element of what makes our culture unique.

Just as you would view the living spaces at a new property to live, be thorough when viewing the bedrooms, bathrooms, shared living spaces and dining facilities of a potential aged care home. Appearance, comfort, cleanliness and noise levels are important specifics to take note of.  Access to additional facilities are also other considerations to include in your research such as:

  • Menu, dietary provisions and where food is prepared
  • Allied health care such as physiotherapy, occupational therapists and dietitians
  • Program of lifestyle and community activities

At Georges Estate, we offer thoughtfully designed and generously appointed modern accommodation to cater for all needs.

Finances
Fees are a key consideration when choosing an aged care home. In Australia, the Government pays an accommodation supplement for residents who are assessed as eligible. Eligibility is determined through a combined assets and income assessment.

Georges Estate accommodation pricing is based on a superior accommodation offering with generously sized, fully furnished single or double/companion bedrooms, each with private ensuite, large flat screen TV, air-conditioning, phone connection and ample cupboard space. Some rooms also have access to a balcony or courtyard.

Specialist care offerings
If your loved one is affected by dementia or Parkinson’s, selecting an aged care residence with specialist care offerings will be paramount to their comfort and happiness. At Georges Estate we offer a range of care based on individual needs and offer purpose-built wings for people living with dementia or Parkinson’s.
