Our eyesight is responsible for 80% of what we perceive through the senses, so making efforts to protect your vision as you age is essential. By looking after our eyes, we can reduce the likelihood of blindness and vision loss as well as staying on top of any developing eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma. Below are some helpful ways of incorporating vision protection into your daily routine.
Sun Protection
Wearing sunglasses when outdoors that block ultraviolet (UV) light rays and wearing a wide brimmed hat to further protect your eyes from direct sunlight exposure is key to protecting our eyes from damage caused by the sun. Interestingly it is important to note that people with fair skin and those with blue eyes have a much higher risk of developing cataracts. Exposure to UV light also increases this risk as it is thought to cause changes in the metabolism of the cells in the retina. Ensure your sunglasses protect against both UV-A and UV-B wavelengths and that they wrap around your face so the sun’s rays can’t “leak” through the sides.
Exercise
Did you know, exercise has been clinically proven to reduce vision loss as you age? A long-term study of more than 15,000 people found that participants who were physically active and only drank alcohol occasionally resulted in less vision loss over 20 years than those who didn’t exercise or drink at all. Cardio exercise also increases blood flow to the optic nerve and retina, improving overall eye health and vision. These are just some of the many reasons to consider incorporating exercise into your daily routine.
Stop Smoking
If you’re a smoker you may be familiar with the well-known health impacts including cancer and heart disease, but did you know that smoking also impacts the health of your eyes and vision? The chemicals you smoke can lead to serious eye conditions that can cause vision loss or blindness, including cataracts and macular degeneration. If you need support with quitting click here.
Smart Food Choices
By eating right you can protect your sight! Studies show a nutrient-rich diet may prevent the progression of conditions like AMD. This includes antioxidants, vitamins and minerals such as A,C,E and zinc, lutein and zeaxanthin and omega-3 fatty acids. At Georges Estate, we ensure our chefs prepare a variety of nutrient-rich food options daily so this is an easy way to look after your eyes.
Regular Eye Exams
Early detection with eye-related conditions is key. Most visual conditions today can be treated with medicine or outpatient surgery. Having regular eye exams is the best way to catch problems early, so that you can reduce or mitigate the impact of age-related vision loss.
